Youth Bands

Youth Bands
Part of the mission of Dixieland Monterey is to encourage young musicians to discover traditional jazz and learn more about their musical heritage. Understanding the fundamentals of early jazz provides an excellent foundation for future musical exploration and study.

A scholarship fund established in 1990 enables youth participation in jazz clinics and camps. Each year at The Jazz Bash by the Bay attendees are treated to performances by a number of outstanding youth bands.

The annual Youth Clinic on the fundamentals of Dixieland jazz will be conducted this year by Eddie Erickson from BED and Dannie Balser from Midnight Rose Jazz Band. The clinic will be in the Bonzai Room from 9AM to 11:30AM. The letter sent to music teachers stated the beginning time as 8:30. If students arrive then, there will be someone to get things organized. The clinic is free to all middle school and high school students.

Basin Street Regular Hotshots
The BSR Hotshots were formed by the Basin Street Regulars Jazz Club in Pismo Beach, California, to compete in the 2007 Sacramento Trad Jazz Youth Band Festival. The Hotshots were composed of mostly local young musicians, and they took top honors, scoring 293 points out of a possible 300. They also took five out of the eight individual band member awards. The students attend nearby Cuesta College and Cal Poly SLO. Several of the band members also perform in other combos and big bands.

Fresno High School was founded in 1889. Two of the most notable musicians to attend Fresno High School are accordionist Dick Contino, and songwriter Ross Bagdasarian aka David Seville (of Alvin and the Chipmunk fame). The Warrior Jazz Band plays an array of jazz styles but will focus on playing music specifically for dancing (big band swing) at the Dixieland Monterey Festival.
